Some thoughts on what I do

Limited Edition:

To impose an arbitrary restraint upon the number of prints I could make from any one image never seemed to me necessary, nor particularly desirable. As a result, most Waswo X. Waswo photographs, up until 2003, were not issued in limited editions. However, the slow work involved in using old equipment and methods, and the meticulous care that I put into the production of each print, did in itself severely limit the number of copies I was able to make. The average number of finished prints of any particular Waswo X. Waswo image were between three and ten. These individual prints were not numbered, but the negative was then locked away and held only for emergency use.

There are some exceptions, times where I have issued strict limited editions.

Probably the most significant of these was the Requiem series, first exhibited in Milwaukee in 1998. Drawing on themes of death and spirituality, these prints were manipulated with the use of selective toners to enhance their ethereal, otherworldly presence. Since the toning was brushed on by hand, it was impossible to make more than one identical print. As a result, the Requiem images were sold as monoprints, and numbered 1/1. A small number of these images, minus the selective sepia and gold toning (and thus not truly part of the series) are still available. These are signed, but not numbered, and lack the distinctive white "Requiem" printed on the matts of the originals.

Due to the insistence of collectors, I started issuing all of my work in strict limited editions since 2003. Edition size is now generally limited to seven, or at times ten. Prints are numbered as well as signed.
